Glazed garden room
A glazed garden room off the back of an Edwardian semi, warm enough to use in January and shaded enough to use in July.
The brief
The owners wanted a room that felt like sitting in the garden, without the cold winters and hot summers that had put them off a standard conservatory.
What we did
- Insulated concrete raft foundation
- Glazed roof in solar-control double glazing
- Opening roof vents on rain sensors
- Underfloor heating on its own thermostat
- Oak floor and a widened opening into the existing house
- Building regulations approval as a heated, habitable room
The tricky part
Getting a mostly glass room signed off as a heated, habitable space meant proving its energy performance on paper first. We worked through the calculations with the glazing supplier and chose units that met the targets without thickening the slim frames the owners had fallen for.
Result
Seven weeks on site, and used every day since.
